Beta Gamma Chi Fraternity

Beta Gamma Chi is a 501(c)(3) LGBTQ fraternity founded in 2009 that curates bold and innovative programs that center queer voices. Headquartered in Philadelphia, we have members located in fifteen states across the United States.

When Gerald Dessus and Dr. Khyle Wooten founded Beta on March 21, 2009, with Anthony Fluellen, they were students at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. They sought to create an organization that would give voice and safety to queer people who struggled to experience belonging in mainstream spaces. They envisioned a fraternity where members could walk boldly in their truth and be innovative and unapologetic about their queerness.

That is why we are here. Our founders created Beta Gamma Chi because they believed in the right to a chosen family. They believed every member of the LGBTQ+ community should have access to safe spaces that affirm, validate, and humanize their experiences.

Milestones

2009: Founded in Pennsylvania, and held the first annual Walk for Brotherhood 

2010: Launched the Am I Blue Project for queer youth and expanded to Maryland 2012-

2014: Expanded to Texas, Ohio, and Georgia 

2017: Launched the Service & Philanthropy program, launched the Don’t Let It Break You program, partnered with Omicron Psi Omega, Inc. to launch the annual Holiday Food Drive, and expanded to Delaware 

2018: Launched the annual Book Bag Drive supporting low-income queer youth, and expanded to New Jersey and New York 

2019: Launched the Queers Talking in Private (QTIP) program in Maryland and Ohio 

2020: Expanded the QTIP program to Pennsylvania, launched virtual programming, and hosted our inaugural World AIDS Day benefit: Code Red

2021: Expanded to Kentucky, and held our inaugural conference
