La Clínica de La Raza is a community health center rooted in the belief that everyone deserves high-quality, culturally appropriate care, regardless of their ability to pay. Since 1971, La Clínica has grown from a student- and community-led storefront clinic in East Oakland into a trusted health care provider serving families across Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties.
Background
La Clínica was born of the efforts put forth by a group of UC Berkeley students in 1971, and has been providing health care services to the communities of the East Bay ever since. The aforementioned students, aware of the gap in health care for lower-income populations, held a conviction: that every person deserves access to high-quality, culturally appropriate health care, regardless of their ability to pay. Influenced by the philosophies of Martin Luther King, these students and several community members worked feverishly to create a community-based clinic. They took action and established a storefront clinic in East Oakland. They called it, ‘La Clínica de La Raza.’
In its first years, La Clínica was a small clinical operation serving only a few hundred patients. With a small staff and strong community support, the organization grew from a grassroots effort into a lasting source of care for East Bay families.
La Clínica has seen great expansion over the years, and now has sites in three different counties - Alameda, Contra Costa and Solano. With the rapid increase in the number of patients, new services have been added to benefit the community, and additional clinics have been built to meet the need. In 2025, La Clínica served over 82,000 patients at our 35 service sites.
La Clínica Vallejo
La Clínica Vallejo opened in 2022 in the heart of downtown Vallejo in a new 26,000-square-foot facility. Our culturally diverse staff provides comprehensive, full-scope health care for the whole family, including newborns, adolescents, adults, and seniors. In addition to medical and dental care, we offer behavioral health, social services, health education, a Pharmacy Assistance Program, and optometry. We also work closely with surrounding hospitals and specialty care providers. La Clínica Vallejo continues to be recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as a Patient-Centered Medical Home, reflecting our commitment to high-quality, coordinated care that helps patients manage their health needs.
Mission
The mission of La Clínica de La Raza (La Clínica) is to improve the quality of life of the diverse communities we serve by providing culturally appropriate, high quality, and accessible health care for all.
