Every donation is doubled for
OutRight Action International
Around this time each year, I've thrown my heart into fundraising - this is the first year, however, that I'm doing that through Give OUT Day.
While there are so many causes that are close to my heart, I'm turning to OutRight Action International this Give OUT Day in recognition that just because I haven't live through a tragedy, doesn't mean I can diminish its importance. Despite the love and acceptance I've had the fortune of feeling, I know that there are people and governments around the world who cause lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals to suffer violence, discrimination, imprisonment, and death.
This winter, I started working for OutRight and saw the work that they do first hand. Their work spans the globe and comes in so many different forms, recognizing that different places need different support. They've worked to train governments on LGBTQ issues, to provide LGBTQ people with healthcare in locations where queer activism is criminalized, to research how civil society organizations can best represent LGBTQ people in countries around the world.
Their work has constantly strived to be intersectional - to recognize that LGBTQ people have a plethora of other identities, always changing and interacting with one another. They work constantly with grassroot organizations to ensure that local activism is prioritized and local voices heard. They continually impress me with their dedication to the queer community, and their understanding of the different ways being LGBTIQ may be expressed around the world.
So this year I'm turning my attention on OutRight, knowing that the money raised on Give OUT Day will go beyond what each of us can imagine, will affect people we have never seen, and will keep changing the world.
