Athlete Ally's mission is to educate and activate athletic communities to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in sports and to exercise their leadership to champion LGBT equality.
Athletes and sports institutions are uniquely positioned to inspire others and impact societal attitudes. Athlete Ally believes that educating and activating allies within athletic communities from professional sports teams to school physical education programs will help eliminate homophobia and transphobia from sports, and mitigate anti-LGBT prejudices at large.
Athlete Ally worked with the NBA on their historic move out of North Carolina following the passing of anti-LGBT law HB2. Given the influx of anti-LGBT pieces of legislation being introduced, we believe the sporting community will be key to defeating this discrimination. It’s why we launched an open-letter from nearly 75 members of the athletic community opposing Texas’ anti-LGBT Senate Bill 6. The organization also co-wrote Champions of Respect, the NCAA’s guide on LGBT policies and best practices.
