Center for Human Development's Empowerment Program recently expanded its services to support LGBTQ+ youth, ages 12-20, in East Contra Costa County, a highly diverse and underserved area, in the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay region. Empowerment is the sole program in East Contra Costa County focused on providing programming and resources to LGBTQ+ youth. Empowerment’s research supported “Safe Space” model offers support services, at no cost to the participants, through weekly support groups where youth are safe to be their authentic selves, develop healthy social support networks, tools for resiliency, self-esteem and pride in their identity.
Each year, in collaboration with community partners, we facilitate social-emotional and educational support groups in two local high schools, one junior high school (as of January 2019), an off-campus drop-in group, a leadership development group, numerous educational workshops, community engagement campaigns, an educational fieldtrip to San Francisco’s GLBT History Museum, and a youth pride dance during LGBT Pride Month. Supporting more than 80 youth annually.
Your support will help ensure our work to support LGBTQ+ youth in this highly underserved area will continue, and hopefully expand to provide additional programming to more youth. Thank you so much on behalf of Center for Human Development, the Empowerment Program, and the youth we serve!
