Who We Are
Founded in 1978 and formally incorporated in 1984, the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LeGaL)
was one of the nation's first bar associations for the LGBT legal community, and remains one of the largest and most active organizations of its kind in the country. Focused on the greater New York metropolitan area, LeGaL is dedicated to improving the administration of the law, ensuring full equality for members of the LGBT community, promoting the expertise and advancement of LGBT legal professionals, and serving the larger community.
In 1994, LeGaL formed a 501(c)(3) foundation as the vehicle for all of its charitable and educational programs. Today, the LeGaL Foundation provides vital legal services to the local LGBT community. Most notably, we operate a growing number of free walk-in legal clinics
throughout the greater metropolitan area. For decades, these clinics have provided a safe space for thousands of members of the local LGBTQ community to seek judgment-free help with their legal problems. The clinics are staffed by trained volunteer attorneys who are available to provide general guidance and legal referrals. Each visitor can expect to have a 15-20 minute consultation with one of our attorneys. The flagship at Manhattan's LGBT Center, started almost thirty years ago, alone serves hundreds of individuals each year.
Last year, LeGaL's legal director was part of the team that secured a sea change in state law for nonbiological parents and we continue to fight for LGBT families. We need your support to continue that work.
Beyond providing crucial legal services, your donation to LeGaL will also help us continue to lift up and bring together local LGBT attorneys, judges, and law students, and provide you with the latest information about developments in the law through our publications and educational events. We can't do it without you.
