The LGBT Center of Raleigh works for community development through a wide range of programs and educational opportunities.
There are few organizations in the City of Raleigh and North Carolina that serve the LGBTQ community. The Center provides educational and social activities, as well as age appropriate referrals and resources.
The LGBT Center of Raleigh empowers people to help themselves and each other through education, confidence building, and socialization, while expressing how education and understanding will build all bridges.
We have been growing at a rapid pace since our inception almost ten years ago. The Center has 23 programs for gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals, and their allies. We are a safe and welcoming environment, as well as an information clearinghouse for central and eastern North Carolina. This is possible because of the support of 300 active volunteers. They staff the Center, assist callers and visitors by finding referrals, and sometimes are simply there because someone doesn’t want to be alone. Our volunteers also run programs and help with special events.
The LGBT Center of Raleigh’s library is the largest LGBT library in the Southeast. We have 4,000+ volumes of LGBT friendly books, resource and reference materials and DVD’s, the majority of which are donated. We have a special collection of rare and vintage books that are available for viewing at the Center. The library is responsible for several of the Center’s more popular programs including the RaleighRainbow Reading Group, Family Story Time, and Meet the Author, which spotlights LGBT authors several times a year.
Out! Raleigh is a family friendly street festival that takes place on the first Saturday in May. Out! Raleigh has a wide variety of vendors, entertainment and a popular KidsZone that has inflatables and educational activities. 2018 saw a record attendance with 61,000+ attendees. We look forward to the festival growing in 2019.
The Center is leading the charge in making North Carolina a better place to live. This is, in no small part, thanks to our volunteers, program chairs, and board members. They help us pave the road so we can continue to help change hearts and minds on a daily basis.
