20% Theatre Company Twin Cities is committed to supporting and vigorously promoting the work of female and transgender/gender non-binary theatre artists, and celebrating the unique contributions of these artists to social change and human rights.

About 20% Theatre Company
In January of 2006, 20% Theatre Company was formed with three goals in mind: 1) to produce and present high quality, professional theatre that empowers artists and inspires social change; 2) to employ and mentor emerging LGBTQ and allied artists; and 3) to always compensate artists for their work.

Over the past 13 years, we have produced over 50 plays and events, including world and regional premieres, sold-out performances, festivals, and productions that have gone on to tour locally and nationally. We have provided artistic opportunities to over 1,000 LGBTQ and allied theatre artists—paying each and every one of those artists—and our work has performed to over 20,000 patrons across Minnesota and the U.S.

If you have experienced a 20% Theatre production—from a seat in the audience, from on stage or from behind the scenes as artists—you know first-hand how important our work is. Especially now. On stage, we are interested in telling the untold stories because we believe that these stories and the way we tell them promotes acceptance and understanding in our communities. We carry that goal to every rehearsal process and every workshop as well.

The resulting vision is to build community through the performing arts, which happens when we bring artists together that may not have otherwise met, when we introduce ground-breaking theatre to diverse audiences, and when we facilitate dialogue between artists and audiences with post-show discussions and workshops. At the heart of it, we are a theatre for social change.

Commitment to Accessibility
It is also our goal to keep our work accessible in as many ways as possible. Every single show we produce offers admission on a sliding scale. We hire the best ASL-interpreting teams and offer interpretation on multiple nights of a production. We make sure the theatres we work with have on-site all-gender bathrooms and are ADA-accessible. These might seem like little things, but they make all the difference to our artists and audiences.

Why We Need You
In today’s economy, it is simply not possible as a small theater company to live out our values in the way that we work, through meeting these goals and priorities, by relying on admission revenues alone. We could never have done this work for so many years without the support of donors who share our vision, and we unquestionably need your support to continue this work.
Queer art is movement building, and we need you to move with us, to build with us. Invest in us, so that more people can experience this transformational work or share their art on a 20% Theatre stage.
What 20% Theatre Means to the Community

“This work is transformational—no one who sees the performances leaves the theatre the same person as they were when they went in. To me, that is true art. You are changing lives—helping people see differently—and I thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to experience this show.”

"It is so refreshing to see greater representation in the arts for POC, queer individuals and those with disabilities."

“Not only have I changed as an artist but I have changed as a person. I have so much respect for everyone involved in Q-STAGE, and everyone involved in creating art in general. We all work so hard to make our visions come alive. Q-STAGE allowed me to let out so many things I had bottled up and in the most spectacularly creative way. I have never felt more free.”

“It was an incredibly moving and polished show. There was so much beauty, grief, vulnerability and healing in the play. Beautifully performed by a talented cast.”
