This Way Out: The International LGBT Radio Magazine
is the world’s only internationally distributed LGBTQ radio show. The award-winning magazine-style program features a summary of some of the major news events in or affecting the LGBTQ community (NewsWrap
), in-depth coverage of major events, interviews with key queer figures, plus music, literature and entertainment — all the information and culture of a global community on the move!
When This Way Out
went on the air in 1988, most of the mainstream media believed that all of LGBTQ life could be summed up in one word: AIDS. Even some progressive journalists and community radio stations worried that coverage of our issues should be “balanced” with homophobic voices. How we got from there to here was neatly summed up by West Hollywood (California) City Mayor Pro Tem John Duran
and Associate Producer Lucia Chappelle
on the occasion of our 30th Anniversary (April 2, 2018).
distributes the weekly half-hour program to some 200 local community radio stations and other non-commercial outlets
around the world free of charge. Local community radio stations and other non-profit broadcasters that would otherwise not be able to offer the program to their listeners get to broadcast LGBTQ news, information and culture in areas where no such voices exist. Listeners can also hear the show on our website
, or subscribe to receive the show as a podcast via SoundCloud
and other web-based podcast sources
, as well as (bi-weekly) CDs. The NewsWrap
segment is available by subscription to our YouTube channel
Most of the people involved in the production of This Way Out
are volunteers, committed to bringing the voices of LGBTQ people to the airwaves telling our own story to a global audience. These dedicated producers and reporters — and the listener-donors who finance the operation — present every angle of the queer experience to a global audience:
In-depth news features
Interviews with authors, activists and thinkers
Music by LGBTQ artists
This Way Out
has been honored with multiple awards from the U.S. National Federation Of Community Broadcasters
and the Radio and Television News Association
, by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)
, Parents, Families and Friends Of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG)
, the Los Angeles chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA)
, and internationally by Tupilak
(the organization of lesbian and gay cultural workers in the Nordic region).
However, the greatest “award” of all comes from the listeners who say that This Way Out has made a tangible difference in their lives, given them the courage to come out (or at least hang on), or inspired them to work to advance the cause of LGBTQ liberation. Those “awards” also belong to every person whose contributions make this program possible!
Your “award” is waiting for you on GiveOUT Day 2019
! In these uncertain, some would say dire, times for LGBTQ people even in the supposedly safest parts of the world, we’re asking listener-donors to Bang the Drum Proudly
, to sound the alarm and to send the signals of hope. Your one-time contribution of at least $10
will ring like a timpani for those who desperately need to know that freedom is possible. Your sustaining monthly contribution of at least $10
will keep the steady beat of liberation pounding around the world.
