The Alyssa Rodriguez Center for Gender Justice strengthens gender justice movements across prison walls and works toward prison abolition and an end to gender-based violence. We build leadership of trans and nonbinary people and cis women in prisons and jails in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, and New York. Led by a group that is majority incarcerated, trans, women, BIPOC, disabled or chronically ill, and survivors of gender-based violence, we share skills, create dialogue, and support, amplify, and resource each other's work. Most of our members practice jailhouse lawyering, using self-taught legal skills to advocate for safety, dignity, and freedom for themselves and other incarcerated people.

Recently, we have done work including:

  1. Lifting up calls to action from members on issues like access to top surgery in a Georgia prison and access to pain management in Pennsylvania prison;
  2. Supporting our members' applications for clemency or parole;
  3. Publishing a guide to legislative advocacy on gender justice issues from inside prisons;
  4. Creating a survival and resource guide with advice by and for trans people, pregnant people, and survivors in prison;
  5. Collaborating with the Lighthouse Learning Collective on a guide to navigating access to gender-affirming hormone therapy from a harm reduction perspective; and
  6. Paying for some of our members' legal fees, because as incarcerated people they cannot get waivers when filing lawsuits.

This Pride season, we're also giving out free pride gift bags to formerly incarcerated and court-involved trans and nonbinary folks and queer cis women. And we're sending books by queer and trans authors to our inside members. To make these things and so many others happen, we need your support!

  • $5 pays for 20 emails between inside and outside members
  • $11.60 pays for one book of stamps
  • $25 pays for one gift bag with stickers, snacks, zines, harm reduction and safer sex supplies, and more
  • $50 pays for sending 2-3 books to a member inside
  • $110 pays for Spanish translation for 500 words of one of our publications
  • $350 pays the filing fee for a survivor’s lawsuit about access to healthcare or safety from violence

Thank you and happy pride!
