El/La Para TransLatinas

A nonprofit organization

El/La Para TransLatinas works to build a world where translatinas feel we deserve to protect, love and develop ourselves. As translatinas, we exist at the intersection of transphobia, sexism, racism, xenophobia and classism. Our participants have experienced high levels of trauma; more than 1 in 4 trans people has faced a bias-driven assault and the average life expectancy of a transwoman of color is 35 years old. El/La is a trusted anchor in our community, working together to build collective vision and action so we can not only survive, but THRIVE and LEAD.

El/La's innovative, holistic, safe space provides programming in Spanish, based in Latin American culture, and connects low-income translatinas to education and resources for self-determination, development, and growth.  We build leadership and advocacy skills so translatinas may lead the organization and work to secure racial and economic equity.

We have tirelessly served translatinas in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. As soon as San Francisco issued its Shelter-in-Place Order, we created a hybrid virtual/in-person program to stay connected with our community. We have become essential workers delivering life-sustaining services and resources, providing access to food, housing resources, case management, and other basic needs. In April 2020, we launched our COVID-19 Rapid Response program where each month we give out direct financial assistance via $175 gift cards and distribute hygiene kits. As of March 2022, we have distributed over $205,000 worth of gift cards and over 250 hygiene kits. We hope to continue this program through the end of the fiscal year with funds raised on Give OUT Day.
