Lambda Archives of San Diego

Lambda Archives of San Diego is the only dedicated LGBTQ+ archives serving the San Diego-Tijuana binational region. Our mission is to collect, preserve, and share the LGBTQ+ history of San Diego, Northern Baja California, and the Imperial Valley, ensuring that the stories of our communities survive, remain accessible, and continue to inspire.

Founded in 1987, Lambda Archives has spent nearly four decades building one of California's most significant repositories of queer and trans history. What began as a grassroots effort to safeguard community records has grown into a professional archival institution holding thousands of photographs, oral histories, periodicals, organizational records, ephemera, and audiovisual materials that document LGBTQ+ life, activism, and culture across the binational region. These are not abstract documents. They are love letters, protest flyers, community newspapers, portraits of people who fought for the freedoms we hold today, and records of lives that deserve to be remembered.

Our collections reflect the full diversity of our communities. Lambda Archives added a Racial Equity Statement to our core organizational commitments in 2020, formalizing a responsibility we take seriously: that Black, Indigenous, queer and trans people of color, and all those historically marginalized even within LGBTQ+ spaces deserve to see themselves represented in the archive.

We serve researchers, educators, students, artists, activists, and anyone curious about the queer past of this region. Our programs bring the archive to life. The Larry T. Baza Memorial Scholarship Fund supports LGBTQ+ youth pursuing higher education, honoring one of San Diego's most beloved cultural leaders. Our Community Historian in Residence program places working historians within the archive to develop new scholarship rooted in our collections. Walking tours of Hillcrest invite the public into the living geography of San Diego's queer history. Digitization partnerships with San Diego State University and the Online Archive of California expand access to our holdings far beyond our doors.

Our public programming is equally vital. From oral history projects like "Queer Stories: Identity, Substance Use, Recovery, and Beyond" to youth leadership initiatives aligned with California's FAIR Education Act, from panel series and film screenings to collaborative exhibits with community partners like Diversionary Theatre, we use the archive as a site of education, healing, and resistance. In a political moment when LGBTQ+ history is under deliberate threat, our work is not simply preservation. It is an act of insistence that we exist, that we have always existed, and that our stories matter.

Lambda Archives operates out of San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood, in the heart of the community whose history we hold in trust. As we approach our 40th anniversary in 2027, we are deepening our collections, expanding bilingual access to serve our binational region, and building the institutional infrastructure to carry this work forward for generations to come.
