PFLAG Clayton-Concord

PFLAG Clayton-Concord is one of hundreds of local PFLAG chapters across the U.S., all individually incorporated, with a mission of education and support for the adult family members of gender diverse people of all ages, as well as advocacy for our LGBTQIA+ loved ones. Our chapter founding members recognized immediately that LGBTQIA+ youth in our community are under-served, so we worked with local schools to produce an intra-district GSA Forum for high school students, where they could discuss real problems and their needed solutions. It was a big success and we repeated it annually, right up until the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. At the 2020 GSA Forum, we heard the fondly expressed wish for "a prom of our own."

It would take two full years to realize the dream! In 2022 we hosted the very first-ever Pride Prom in Contra Costa (CA) County history. A queer DJ spun the tunes in The Enchanted Forest, where 103 high school juniors and seniors danced the night away, sustained by the delicious catering from the student-run restaurant at one of the local high schools. And treated to two performances by an award-winning drag queen ! It was truly an evening to remember, as was Pride Prom 2023. Pride Prom 2024 will be held May 11, featuring diverse music, dancing, drag, fab food and more. 

Donors are needed to keep the ticket price at one-fourth of the average prom ticket and to sponsor free tickets for students who cannot afford a ticket. 40% of our prom guests are sponsored. 

We also host safe spaces for our gender diverse students to hang out and meet others in the area. Students tell us how great it is to meet LGBTQIA+ folx from other campuses, especially if they're not fully out on their own campus. These informal events are free to those attending.
