Equality NC Foundation transforms North Carolina!

There is so much to process right now. The senseless murder of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. Tony McDade, a black transgender person, shot and killed by Tallahassee police. Iyanna Dior, a black transgender woman, brutally beaten by cis-gender men in Minneapolis. The injustice and violence perpetrated against the most vulnerable people in our communities is compounding daily.

I'm not sure what to do about racism, and I'm looking for answers. One thing I think we can do is contribute to organizations with black leadership. Kendra Johnson, the executive director of Equality NC, has worked to advance fairness and equality for all LGBTQ including the unique challenges and needs of the African American LGBTQ community. She is a tireless leader in the fight for equality and social justice. 

Under her leadership, Equality NC Foundation has implemented the Rural Youth Empowerment (RYE) Fellowship program, a year-long mentorship and training program for LGBTQ young people in rural areas of North Carolina. This program promotes social justice oriented community service projects that serve rural communities while developing leadership skills for the RYE fellows.

As a leader, Kendra believes that we’re stronger standing together as a community. She knows that the LGBTQ community faces the same set of problems that Black and Brown communities, immigrant communities, women, and the rural or resource-poor face.  She is committed to helping these communities with access to education, health care, and a fair workplace.
