Movement Architecture is seeking to raise $5,000 as we begin creative development for our next artistic project:
NIKS/SKINS
But first, let’s take a look at this past exciting year. After 5 years of development, MA presented From Tokyo to Brooklyn: A Jagged Journey!
For those of you who missed it, From Tokyo to Brooklyn was an interactive dance installation that traveled through the backstage spaces of Northrop at the University of Minnesota, inspired by Jinza’s story of immigration. Click here to see a 1-min version of the show!
Thank you for interacting with the Performance Ushers, rolling dice, engaging with the “the creature” (large mobile installation) and participating in the dance.

Q&A With From Tokyo to Brooklyn Cast:
Dancers from left to right: Stephanie Battle, Erika Hansen, Anne Lentz
QUESTION 1:
What was your favorite part of the process?
Anne Lentz:
My favorite part of the process was the collaborative nature of making From Tokyo to Brooklyn. Jinza is very inspired by the individual, the person standing in front of her in the studio.
It was such a rich and layered piece that involved working with many fabulous artists as well as set and production designers. I loved being part of that process.
QUESTION 2:
What are a few moments from residency/show week that you’ll never forget?
Erika Hansen:
1) I was delighted to see the creature come to life by the danceteers and the projection images.
2) The first moment that we were all in the theater together...17+ dedicated collaborators. All of the artists working on the show were so kind and present.
3) The drama of Melo slowly being unrolled from the bubblewrap down the hallway.
Looking Ahead to NIKS/SKINS:
Did you know that the skin is the largest sensory organ of the body? Have you noticed that it is both a physical barrier and the gateway to sensing the world around you? As we dig into our genes at the level of DNA, differences in skin color are the result of a single substitution of a nucleic acid pairing in a gene. It’s curious how socio-cultural perceptions of skin can reveal assumptions and define human experiences.
We are beginning Phase 1 for this project: artistic development. MA will be entering the studio to play and explore, delving into the cultural and biological aspects of the skin.
CAMPAIGN GOAL: $5,000
Every donation, no matter how small is appreciated.
It all makes a difference! Thank you!

WHERE DOES MY DONATION GO?
ARTISTIC SUPPORT:
A primary goal of MA is to fairly pay artists involved with the development of NIKS/SKINS. These artists include dancers, installation artists, projection artists, lighting and sound designers, videographers, as well as choreographer Jinza Thayer.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT:
Another goal of MA is to support the administrative labor that keeps the MA wheel turning! This includes covering things like PR, marketing, scheduling, and communicating with collaborators.
MOVEMENT ARCHITECTURE:
Movement Architecture (MA) is a contemporary dance company whose mission is to create, educate and heal through movement. Convening under the artistic direction of somatic movement educator and choreographer Jinza Thayer, MA constructs environments as a way to probe one’s internal world, presenting dance alongside large abstract props and visual installations.
