Already among the most vulnerable and marginalized, existing challenges faced by undocumented LGBTQ+ asylum-seekers are now compounded by the impact of Covid-19.
Entire industries have ground to a halt and clients are quickly losing their jobs. Federal economic relief is not available to the undocumented. For LGBTQIA+ asylum-seekers, the stress, fear, and insecurities imposed by the global pandemic is felt on top of existing trauma, poverty, and lack of access to healthcare.
Despite current circumstances, asylum application filing deadlines and requirements have not changed.
To qualify for asylum, most Oasis clients must submit a psychological evaluation from a licensed professional with their asylum application. While Oasis can waive our fees for those impacted by COVID-19, clients must still pay between $300 and $500 for a psychological evaluation. Without this evaluation, we cannot file a client’s asylum case, and due to strict filing deadlines.
A person may lose their chance at winning asylum forever.
As an emergency stopgap, we have set up a fund to pay for the evaluations of clients who are out of work because of COVID-19 and for our waived fees, so that no one loses their chance at securing safety.
We are asking you, our community - can you help us?
