Why Pride?

I chose to sponsor Pride because it was the first place I felt I could be 100% myself. I knew I wasn’t straight around the age of 13 when it made me happier to hold a girl’s hand than it did to kiss a boy. 

In high school, I would sneak out to go to SD Pride and tell my parents that I was staying at a friend's place. I grew up in a very strict and conservative household. I would ask my friends not to post pictures of me because if my parents ever found out I went to Pride, would get into a lot of trouble. But, Pride helped me find myself. Pride helped me figure out who I was. It was only fitting that in 2017, I came out publicly on the first day of the Pride festival. It was perfect.

For me, Pride has always been my safe space to see what I could be. What drew me to Pride was all of the people who were living their truth unapologetically. Now, I choose to sponsor Pride because they provide a safe space that saves lives. Because I know that Pride saved mine.
