As a person who is both nonbinary and has had mental illness my whole life, I am so grateful that Trans Lifeline exists and I wish it was around when I was a teenager! It is an incredibly important life saving peer support crisis hotline where all the operators that you talk to are also trans. It is especially important now with the pandemic, horrifying healthcare rollbacks and during this amazing revolution!

If you post about police abolition, please put your money where your mouth is and donate, because this is a literal community alternative to policing (how exciting!). Trans Lifeline’s work directly reduces the frequency of over policing trans people experience, especially when seeking mental health support and crisis counseling. They will also never call the police or 911 services on hotline callers without the caller’s explicit permission.

When I was 18 and 19, before Trans Lifeline existed, I had an ambulance called on me twice. Both of these times caused extreme financial hardship for me and my family. The time when I was 19, I was involuntarily committed at a hospital, which took me several years to heal from the trauma of having my autonomy taken away and also not fed. I begged the hospital to let me go home because I was so scared there and they told me my home wasn’t safe (which wasn’t true). This was at a time when I was seeing a psychiatrist once a month who was straight and would look at me very confused whenever I tried to talk about gender and sexuality. It is very important to talk to someone who understands you and your identities. When I finally found a gender non conforming queer artist therapist who truly understood me, this saved my life. This is why it is so important to have a community service like Trans Lifeline. Trans people talking to other Trans people, understanding and affirming their life in the world.

Trans Lifeline also has a microgrant program that gives trans people money to legally change their name and gender. The average cost of changing an ID is $455 for a U.S. citizen and over $1,700 for someone in the immigration process. This is many times a huge roadblock for many trans folx. The program’s racial equity policy ensures that 75% of all funds go to Black, Indigenous, and POC applicants. Plus the microgrants also provide specialized support to trans people who are incarcerated or detained.

So please join me in supporting Trans Lifeline!!
