TSBC is a small, community-based, nonprofit organization that has provided donor assistance differently from day one. TSBC was founded in 1982 to provide reproductive services for lesbian couples and single women because they were denied access elsewhere. 

TODAY, we serve LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities, single people, those facing infertility, and those wanting to retain future family building options (including trans youth). Many still face barriers simply trying to building their family and/or retain that option for the future. TSBC’s goal remains focused on overcoming these barriers.

Our research & example changed how donor conception is practiced across the country & around the world. 

TSBC’s comprehensive approach informs current policy debates about openness in donor conception. At the request of intended parents, we started innovative programs decades ago that continue today. These “before-their-time” programs (Identity-Release® Program, Family Contact List, low family limit, and educational approach to donor-assisted family building) are now backed by published research. Our commitment to policies that support the well-being of donor-conceived people starts with protecting their legal relationships to their parents through LGBTQIA+ families’ parentage rights. 

We support families, donor-conceived adults, and donors by providing mutual-consent openness options. More than 4000 families (parents: 60% LGBTQIA+ couples and 24% single parents) have been assisted by TSBC program donors--40% of families participate in the Family Contact List. Since 2001, 400 donor-conceived adults have received their donor’s identity through the Identity-Release® Program which represents 70% of our donors. Part of the success behind this program, we believe is the work, like ongoing pregnancy audits, that maintains our 10-family limit–-the lowest available in the US. Since 2014 all new donors have agreed to be identifiable to interested donor-conceived adults. With our directed donor program, we support intended parents who have chosen a donor who is known to them.

I have had many wonderful interactions with some of my “biological offspring” (preferred term here tends to vary from person to person), including letter and email exchanges, in-person meetings, and, more recently, zoom meetings. It’s been a real pleasure getting to know some of these fascinating young people and certainly leaves me grateful that, over 20 years ago, I made the donor-identity decision that I did.

Our team supports our TSBC community daily in many other ways behind the scenes and at no additional charge.  We continue to expand our donor counseling and screening, and to support donor-conceived adults through the process of requesting the donor’s identity. Genetic and medical advisors review newly reported medical information so we can share medical updates with parents, donor-conceived adults, and donors. Our team provided letters for parents obtaining confirmatory adoptions.

We do all our work under our guiding principles of equity, access, and inclusion. We serve the rainbow of the LGBTQIA+ community, solo parents, parents with multiple partners, and also heterosexual couples who are seeking an open and comprehensive approach to donor conception. Knowing most families seek a donor who shares ethnicity with one or more parents, in 2018 we developed our Equity Policy to preserve access for those with fewer options. And our staff take extra care and pride in supporting trans* people, including youth (and their parents) who store their genetic material prior to gender affirming treatments.
